Jammu, Aug 19: Jammu Photographers Union today organized a plantation drive to mark the 181st World Photography Day. The members hailing from all the districts of Jammu province under the banner of JPU, planted saplings of various plants at their respective destinations in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and health advisories. Speaking on the occasion, President of the Union Kapi l Kapoor said that in view of COVID-19, the Union had decided to celebrate the day as a low key affair by organizing plantation drive to save the environment. He further said that the profession of photography fall under an unorganized sector and due to lockdown measures, the community has suffered huge losses on account of less work and less income. The government should pay heed towards the issues of the photographer community. Among others who were present on the occasion in Jammu included General Secretary Pardeep and Cashier Bodh Raj. Pertinently, August 19 is observed as World Photography Day, to pay homage to the history of photography. The day originates from the invention of the daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Louis Daguerre. On January 9, 1839 The French Academy of Sciences announced the process and a few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift free to the world, which marked the beginning of the day.
