EARLY TIMES REPORT

POONCH, Aug 19: The people of Kandi Panchayat and adjoining areas in Balakote block of Mendhar Sub-Division of Poonch district are facing acute shortage of water apparently due to the sheer neglect of the Public Health Engineering (Jal Shakti Department).
Residents of the area said that six years ago, a water tank was constructed by the PHE Department under a `PHE Scheme’ on the land of one Mohd Bashir, located near a natural spring, with an aim to supply water to Ward No 4 and 6 of Panchayat Kandi, adding that the pipe lines were also laid down for the purpose and connected to more than 50 households.
But till Date water tank was not connected to the natural spring for storage of water and supply to the households, reasos for which are best known to PHE Department, they said.
The residents further said that they made several complaints to the concerned quarters but all in vain as nothing substantial happened.
“In the month of May we approached SDM Mendhar for redressal of our grievance. On SDM’s intervention and direction a team of PHE officials visited the site and provided water supply directly from the nearby natural spring but it lasted only for 15 days as the supply again got stopped,” said the locals.
“Even after visiting the site, the PHE Department did not make any effort to operationalize the water tank. We again met SDM Mendhar on June 1 and also submitted a representation before the AEE PHE Division Mendhar but still the water tank has not been made functional/connected to spring for storage of water and subsequent supply to the households,” they added.
The local residents urged the Deputy Commissioner, Poonch to personally intervene in this matter and direct the concern official to make the tank functional so that water supply is provided to the people to put an end to their sufferings.
Meanwhile AEE PHE Mendhar, Sudhir Sharma when contacted, said that he will look into the matter and take necessary action.
