JAMMU, Aug 23: United Democratic Alliance (UDA) expressed serious concern over the delay in the renewal of gun licences in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. In a statement issued here today, Rajiv Mahajan, Chief Spokesperson UDA, said “The high profile fake gun licenses issuance case, which raised eyebrows within the bureaucratic setup after involvement of a J&K cadre civil servant, has left the gun license holders in limbo for renewal of the licenses as files are in possession of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).” While quoting the report of a local daily, Mahajan said that thousands of genuine gun licenses, issued in various districts, have expired but the irony is that they cannot be renewed despite the fact that the licensees have applied for the same. "Thousands of valid and genuine gun licenses have expired this year but unfortunately they cannot be renewed in view of the ongoing investigation into fake gun licensee cases by the CBI," Mahajan said. “We are tired of making rounds from one table to another in the Deputy Commissioners’ office to get our licence renewed. But every time we are sent back with a new excuse. It was a clear violation of the Public Service Guarantee Act,” he said, adding that due to non-renewal of gun licence, we cannot take the weapon outside for our protection. It is utter incompetence of the authorities which fail to renew the licence in time,” Mahajan said. Mahajan appealed to the Divisional Commissioner, Sanjeev Verma to look into the matter and pass necessary directions so that the genuine applicants may not suffer any more.
