BARAMULLA, Aug 26: Scores of contractual employees working with Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme in Boniyar Block of Sub Division Uri today staged a Pen down protest demanding regularization of their jobs. According to sources, the protest was held in the Boniyar Block of Sub Division Uri during which the protesters, hailing from Boniyar, Norkhah and Bijhama blocks, raised slogans against the “callous approach” of the government. “We are working in the Rural Development Department (RDD) for the last 13 years; we have also done work 14th FC, CDF, Back to Village, SBM, and Election and have been completely neglected by the government, said sources while quoting the protesters. Sources while quoting, Imran Ahmed Banday as having said that, the authorities are yet to regularize our services and provide us equal pay for equal work,” said Imran Ahmed Banday. He said that we have been working in MGNREGA with full dedication for years on a meager honorarium that is not enough to support their families. BDC chairman’s and all Sarpanchs and Panchs of Sub Division Uri support them and they have requested the Government of India (GoI) to fulfill the genuine demands of the employees of MGNREGA as soon as possible. However sources said that, there are scores of employees who are working as contractual employees with different centrally sponsored schemes from past many years, but till date their honorarium was not increased due to best reasons known to the authorities. They said that, even though many times in the past we were promised that all our demands will be fulfilled on priority basis, it seems that only we were shown the green meadows, and we sacrificed a lot in terms of health and other jobs, even though we have not given up hope yet. Many times we requested the government to fulfill our genuine demands, but no favorable step was taken so far by the government. It seems that the government is not ready to pay heed to our demands, now we urge the lieutenant governor to address our problems at the earliest, said sources.
