PDP resumes vote bank politics in Kashmir
Defends illegal constructions, encroachments

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 26: Even as the government has finally started serving notices to people whose establishments pose threat to Srinagar during floods here, the Peoples Democratic Party is finding it opportune moment to resume vote bank politics.
The recently established Jal Shakti Department Irrigation and Flood Control Sub Division Sonwar has served notices to the people who have constructed houses illegally on government land along the banks of Jhelum in Srinagar thereby making the city more prone to floods.
Official documents as accessed by the Early Times reveal that the numerous such notices have been served in the recent past. “Since your illegal structure figures in the list of encroachers on left side of River Jhelum is to be removed. As such you are once again directed to remove your illegal structure within 5 days yourself, falling which your illegal structure will be dismantled and removed at your risk and cost,” reads one such notice by Executive Engineer of the Jal Shakti.
Instead of appreciating the government efforts, the PDP leaders are out to provoke those who have unlawfully occupied the government land.
Mehbooba Mufti’s handle has taken a lead to highlight such remarks as made by her party leaders.
“Amid #Covid_19 lockdown, political insecurities & year of shocks - Jal Shakti I&FC department has issued notices of eviction to all locals living in peripheries of Jehlum. Within 5 days, people see this move as political,” had posted a senior PDP leader and Mehbooba’s handle retweeted the same.
The PDP had to face instant reaction from the people. “Illegal encroachments done with the patronage of D***s & Mufties after all has to b removed under law. Let Kashmir look beautiful. More tourists more money. U benefit. Dont cry foul,” posted a concerned citizen.
A senior official said it was unfortunate that PDP was resorting to vote bank politics on an issue that would save Srinagar from floods. “We are planning eviction from area where encroachments had led to floods in 2014. Instead of appreciating the drive such netas are aggravating the situation,” the official said.
Meanwhile a senior official in the Jal Shakti Board said that notices have been served to those who have encroached upon government land and thus made Srinagar more vulnerable to floods.
He said action was expected in the coming days.
