Rain wreaks havoc across Jammu; one die, bridge collapses, houses damaged | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 26; Incessant rains on Wednesday wreaked havoc in parts of Jammu region where in a bridge collapsed here at city outskirts and mud houses were partially damaged in Poonch and Rajouri districts. Number of vehicles damaged and houses partially due to continuous rains in Jammu and other parts of the region. In Jammu, rain water entered many houses and shops in Canal Road, Krishna Nagar, Bhagwati Nagar, Talab Tillo and other low lying areas. People rued and criticized the Jammu Municipal Corporation for not taking measures in advance in view of the monsoon season. They alleged that many nallahs and drains overflow due to heavy rains and the dirty water entered their houses. Many household items were also damaged due to rain water in parts of Jammu. Local residents criticized local Jammu Municipal Councillors and former MLAs and Ministers for not taking appropriate measures in addressing their grievances. However, a bridge collapsed and washed away in Babilana area here on the city outskirts. The bridge used to connect border villages with Jammu city. Locals slammed the district administration alleging that years have passed but no permanent solution was found so far with regard to connectivity of border villages with the rest of the city. About 200 villages in Jammu outskirts were cut off, as a bridge over Dhrapnullah, was washed away due to flash flood caused by torrential rainfall this morning. Incident took place this morning at 9:30 am, as the bridge failed to bear the pressure of the gushing stream of water and collapsed. Onlookers on both sides of road saw how heavy downpour dramatically increased volume and pressure of water in a nullah, wearing away the earth around and underneath bridge piers. “And within no time we saw the bridge crumbling. Thank God no one was walking over the bridge at that point of time,” said Ujagar Singh, resident of that area. Many people were stuck on both sides of the road as bridge submerged in water near Jeevan Nagar area. Because of the bridge collapse, helpless people were left with no option, but to take a longer route to reach their homes or respective place of work. “Normally it takes me about 10 minutes to reach my place. Now it will take me more than one hour to reach home,” said ParmeetSingh, concerned resident pf that area. People of that area blamed concerned authorities of using poor quality material for the construction of a bridge. “Within a few years of its construction, this bridge has collapsed. That clearly points towards the usage of poor quality material in the construction process,” said Baldev Singh another resident of that area. Fifteen persons, belonging to different families, were rescued on Wednesday after they were caught in flash floods in Ujh river in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The police acted swiftly after getting information about the trapped people of a nomadic tribe in their temporary shelters near the river in Rajbagh area, a police official said. He said a police team led by Station House Officer Bhopinder Singh immediately rushed to the spot and shifted all 14 marooned people belonging to three different families, including women and children, to safety. Another person, who was found trapped in his house on the bank of Ujh river in Rajbagh, was also rescued, the official said. Most parts of Jammu region have been lashed by heavy rains since Tuesday, leaving most of the water bodies swollen and low lying areas waterlogged. The heads of the families namely 1. A 35-year-old man was killed and a bridge washed away as heavy rains lashed wide parts of Jammu region for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, officials said. A temple also suffered some damages after being struck by lightning while people in different areas faced a lot of problems due to waterlogging after the early morning rains in the city and elsewhere, they said. Mohammad Shokit was killed when his ‘kutcha’ house collapsed due to heavy rains in Kalaban area of Manjakote in Rajouri district, the officials said. Power supply to whole of Mendhar has been cut off due to damage to 33 Kv lines from Draba and Manjakote due to flash floods. “Men and machinery has been pressed into service for early restoration,” the officials said. They said main footbridge connecting Jammu-Poonch highway with Rajouri Garden in Manjakote village near Thandikassi in Rajouri got damaged due to heavy rains. Reports said one cattle shad of Mohammad Aslam son of Sab Din Gujjar of Sanghiote in Mendhar area of Poonch district collapsed due to heavy rains in which five buffalos died. A Tata Sumo also got stuck in flash flood at Chhatral area of Mendhar. A police team headed by SHO Mendher Manzoor Kohli reached on spot and carried out the rescue operation in the supervision of SDPO Mendhar Neeraj Padyar, they said. Several cattle sheds also collapsed in Poonch and Rajouri districts, they said. Also due to cloud burst in Mastandara area of Surankote three vehicles got damaged, they added The officials said lightning struck a temple at Pacca Danga this morning, causing minor damage to a corner of the building but none was injured. In view of heavy rains over the past 12 hours in most parts of Jammu region, authorities have issued an alert and advised people not to move close to any water body and contact police incase they need any help.
