Tajinder condemns exclusion of Punjabi from J&K Official Language Bill | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 3: Social Activist Tajinder Singh has condemned the exclusion of Punjabi from Jammu and Kashmir Official Language Bill. Tajinder said that it’s a grave injustice towards the entire Sikh community who are in minority in Jammu and Kashmir. He alleged that the decision shows the neglect of Punjabi language in J&K as first it was made a non-compulsory subject/language and then all efforts were made by the successive governments for extinction of Punjabi language. “Punjabi language has been given the recognition and guarantee under Article 146, Schedule VI of the J&K Constitution. Thus it becomes obligatory on the part of the J&K Government to make all efforts for the promotion of Punjabi language in addition to other regional languages,” he said. Social activist said that on what grounds Union Cabinet has rejected the Punjabi language and added other 4 languages. Singh further said Punjabi language was the only language which was being taught in the schools of J&K since long. It added that earlier Punjabi was a compulsory subject up to Class X but later students were given an option to choose Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi language as one of the optional subjects in board exams. Tajinder Singh condemns the Union Government’s decision on deliberately ignoring Punjabi language and said that this act had created strong resentment among the Sikh community in J&K.
