Social distancing norms go for toss during NDA exams | Candidates found walking shoulder to shoulder at exam centre | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 6: Amid surge in COVID-19 cases across the country as well as Jammu region, the social distancing norms have been grossly flouted by the aspirants at the exam centres, established to conduct National Defence Academy (NDA) exams. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducted NDA, Naval Academy entrance exams on Sunday, while in view of COVID-19 pandemic the NDA 1 and NDA 2 exams were held on the same day across the country. One exam centre was established by UPSC authorities at Government College for Women (GCW) Gandhi Nagar where social distancing norms as well as other safety protocols were found to be openly flouted by the aspirants, despite tall claims made by authorities concerned to follow the guidelines. The UPSC authorities had claimed that it would maintain the safety protocols at the exam centres across the country but apart from face-masks, no other safety norms could be seen followed by the aspirants. As per pictures available with Early Times, the aspirants could be seen coming out of exam centre in flocks and the idea of maintaining social distancing norms by the candidates was lost in oblivion. The aspirants in the entrance of the college gate, could be seen walking just like in a public fair and even the sole idea of maintaining six feet distance between two, was not even in the wildest dreams of those aspirants. “Though the aspirants could also be blamed for gross negligence but primarily the onus of ensuring social distancing and other safety protocols at the exam centres lies on the UPSC authorities, which were conducting the exams”, an official said, adding that already Jammu province has been witnessing surge in the COVID-19 patients as well as fatalities and during such time, the violation of safety protocols at the exam centres could prove disastrous to the candidates. The UPSC authorities should have taken the assistance of the district administration Jammu, to maintain the social distancing norms and other protocols. “The UPSC has been conducting the exams since its constitution decades back and the authorities have proper number of candidates, who have to appear in the exams. When the authorities were aware that over five hundred candidates would be appearing in one exam centre, then they should have made the arrangements but at Gandhi Nagar exam centre the failure of the authorities was totally visible”, father of an aspirant said, adding that there were no proper arrangements in place at the exam centre but the aspirants were asked to appear in the exams and they had come with safety measures but authorities were totally failed in their duty. |
