Joining Gupkar Conclave: It is ‘to be or not to be for Congress party’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 2: An old adage- to be or not to be is turning pertinent for Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir. The party that earlier distanced itself from the Gupkar conclave is now busy discovering ways and means to stay with the conglomerate. “It is like running with the hares and hunting with the hounds for Congress. When Gupkar declaration signatories met on October 16 this year, the Congress party stayed away from the meeting. Later it denounced its association with any such amalgam and even ridiculed Mehbooba Mufti over her remarks on national flag. Now the party is again making strenuous efforts get associated with the PAGD,” said a senior PDP leader here. Sources said that the Congress is divided over the issue as some of its leaders want to become a part of the Gupkar Declaration while some are demanding that the party must maintain a distance from the amalgam. On October 30 this year, JKPCC chief G A Mir said that common platform is must to fight against repealing of land laws. “Congress and the existing alliance of mainstream leaders have many common agendas and decisions taken in August last year are the common agenda. We are part of these common agendas,” Mir said, hinting at being ready to join PADG. However, a day later, he adopted a completely different stance. On October 31, he said that any decision to join the newly formed Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration depends on the nod from the party high command in New Delhi. “Congress is a national party and it was not possible for me to attend the meeting without taking the party high command on board. The central leadership of the Congress is currently busy in Bihar elections and it’s not possible to talk about these issues,” he said. Mir had earlier cited medical reasons for not attending the Gupkar alliance meeting in Srinagar. Though he didn’t divulge any further details, he said he was advised by the doctors to undergo a thorough medical check-up besides Covid-19 examination, as a result, he was not able to attend all party meeting at the residence of former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah. On October 12 during her Jammu and Kashmir visit, Congress party’s in-charge of its J&K affairs Rajni Patil advocated for the reservation of jobs for the locals of Jammu and Kashmir in the erstwhile state. The statement has raised eyebrows as the party is a signatory to the Gupkar resolution that demands reversal of all the decisions taken post-August 5, 2019. NC Vice President Omar Abdullah on October 16 in his first TV interview had taken a jibe at the Congress party hinting that the party was acting indifferently when it comes to becoming part of the alliance which is demanding restoration of the August 4, 2019 position. Omar’s attack on the Congress came on a day when the party skipped the meeting that took place between various political groups after the release of Mehbooba Mufti from 14 month detention. |
