After Farooq shuns China rhetoric, Mehbooba promises to hold tricolor
11/12/2020 12:33:43 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 11: After Dr Farooq Abdullah, it is now Mehbooba Mufti’s turn to correct her past mistakes. She has promised to hold the tricolour and protect country’s constitution.
Last month, after being released from 14- month detention, Mehbooba had said that she wouldn’t be holding the tricolour till Jammu and Kashmir’s special status is restored. Prior to that when Article 370 was intact, she warned that no one in Kashmir would hold the tricolour if special status is even touched. However, she justified her recent statement, lamenting that she has made the remarks due to the abrogation of Article 370.
A month later, Mehbooba Mufti has taken a complete U-Turn. She has now stated that she will hold the tricolor and the flag of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir together, saying as an MLA she had reaffirmed her faith in the JK Constitution and the sovereignty and integrity of India as both are inseparable.
“I have taken an oath of the JK Constitution when I became the MLA for the first time and I affirm my faith in the Constitution of JK and uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India – both of which are interlinked. The JK flag and Indian flag, I will hold both these flags together,” the former J&K chief minister told reporters at the end of her five-day visit to Jammu – her first after release from over one-year-long detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Earlier, it was Farooq Abdullah who taken a similar U-turn in his statement about China, declaring that the people of the erstwhile state want to remain in the Union of India. “If Jammu and Kashmir wanted to go to Pakistan, they would have done so in 1947. No one could have stopped it,” Abdullah had said.
The NC president was quite vocal in terms of praising China. He even went to the extent of stating in an interview that people of Jammu and Kashmir were ready to go with China instead of any other option. He even stated that with China’s help, it is very much possible that Article 370 could be restored.
Now when both the senior leaders of the Gupkar alliance have begun falling in line, what remains to be seen is whether they would be mending their traditional ways and means so that people aren’t befooled with mindless rhetoric.
Earlier, while these parties used to boycott the polls, they are now jumping into the fray quite zealously, leaving no stone unturned to ask people to vote this time for the new formed grand alliance of the mainstream political groups. The notions of the changing dynamics of politics in Jammu and Kashmir are slowly becoming clearer with each passing day.
