Centre not allowing level-playing field for DDC elections, alleges Farooq, Mehbooba
11/22/2020 12:08:44 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 21: Ahead of the first-phase of District Development Councils (DDCs) elections, leaders of Gupkar Alliance have started blaming Centre for sabotaging participation of non-BJP parties in these polls.
President of the Alliance and former chief minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has written a letter to Election Commissioner of J&K, K K Sharma in which he (Farooq Abdullah) alleged discrimination with their candidates.
First phase of the DDCs elections will be held on November 28.
Echoing in similar voice, vice president of the Alliance and ex-chief minister Mehbooba Mufti stepped up attack on Centre for demoralizing their candidates. Mehbooba preferred to use social media to step up attack on the Centre while Dr Abdullah has written a letter to the Election Commissioner. “Security is being used as a pretext to impede and customize democracy in the Union Territory (UT)”, Dr Abdullah alleged, adding, “Providing security to a select few and literally interning the rest is a gross interference in democracy”.
“I am taking the liberty of writing to you about the upcoming DDC elections. A strange and a unique feature has come to the fore. Candidates put up by the PAGD are immediately whisked away to 'secure locations' in the name of security and confined to those 'secure locations'. They are not allowed to canvas, they are completely out of touch with those from whom they are supposed to seek votes,” Abdullah said in the letter.
Mehbooba, on the other hand, accused the Union Government of “sabotaging” the participation of political parties other than the BJP in the DDCs polls by not allowing them to campaign freely.
“The GOI sabotaging participation of non-BJP parties in DDC polls. PDPs Bashir Ahmed despite having adequate security has been detained at Pahalgam on the pretext of security. Today is the last day for filing nominations & have spoken to DC Anantnag for his release @manojsinha_,” the PDP chief said on Twitter.
