DDC elections: Cong faces revolt as mandates denied to young leaders | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 21: Congress is facing revolt after many party leaders announced to contest District Development Councils (DDCs) elections as independent candidates. Although Congress is fighting these important elections ‘half-heartedly’ due to ‘non-cooperative’ attitude of the ‘demoralized’ high command, many young party leaders have announced to join the electoral battle as independent candidates after they were denied mandates by the local leadership. Highly placed sources said that Congress said that fearing defeat most of the senior Congress leaders could not muster the guts to contest the elections but they were also not ready to give mandates to the promising and upcoming youth leadership in their respective areas. “Instead of allowing promising young leaders to contest elections, senior Congress leaders have managed mandates for their loyalists in their respective areas just to spoil chances of young leaders”, sources said and added that many young leaders who have potential to give tough fight to their rivals were denied mandates due to intervention of senior leaders who don’t want to allow any youth leader to work in their respective constituencies. Already PCC general secretary Chowdhary Shahnawaz has announced to contest election as independent candidate from Surankote-A, Satish Sharma, son of veteran Congress leader Madan Lal Sharma from Khour area, Imran Zaffar from Mendhar, Alliyas Wani from Banihal. Sources said that many youth leaders would join the electoral battle as independent candidates in the coming days because senior leaders were opposing mandates to them. On the one hand these senior leaders are opposing mandates to promising young leaders, on the other hands they have been fielding proxy candidates in different areas to teach lessons to each other in different areas. In Kathua district, two senior Congress leaders have already fielded their loyalists on the same seat thus creating problems for the party. |
