DDC elections: To counter Gupkar Alliance BJP focusing on Gujjars-Bakerwals
11/25/2020 12:05:50 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 24: To counter Kashmir centric Gupkar Alliance the BJP is especially focusing on the Gujjars and Bakerwals during the District Development Council (DDC) elections in J&K in general and Kashmir Valley in particular.
Apart from deputing Union ministers and prominent Gurjar faces of the party to reach out to Scheduled Tribes (STs) of J&K, some Sangh Parivar leaders have also started exercise to woo Gujjars and Bakerwals.
Top RSS leader Indresh Kumar, who had earlier served as Prant Pracharak in J&K, addressed an impressive function of Gujjars and Bakerwals at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust on November 19- in which prominent Gurjar leaders from different parts of the country spoke and appealed community members of J&K to support only ‘nationalist’ political parties. Local Sangh Parivar leaders have already opened channel communication with prominent Gujjar leaders of J&K to woo the community for the DDC elections.
BJP has already deputed Union Minister, Krishan Pal Gurjar to hold interaction with community members in J&K ahead of the DDC elections. Furthermore party has deputed its Rajya Sabha member, Surender Nagar for campaigning in different parts of J&K. Nagar is only Gurjar member in the Rajya Sabha.
In the backdrop of reported pitch for measures to empower the Gujjar-Bakerwal community in the Saffron camp following the abrogation of Article 370, Nagar had demanded welfare schemes, including official language status for ‘Gojri’. He also championed the cause for reservation of (ST) Assembly seats in J& K for Gujjars and Bakerwals. Nagar also espoused the case for instituting a ‘Gujjar Scout’ which would open employment opportunity in Defence sector for tribal youth who are well conversant with the mountainous terrain of J&K.
Nagar, who is in the thick of election campaign for the DDC elections, said on Tuesday that the Gujjars and Bakarwals were showing inclination towards the BJP.
As Gujjars and Bakerwals, who have been accorded Scheduled Tribe (ST) status are biggest beneficiaries of the abrogation of Article 370, BJP has decided to rope in this community to counter the ‘Gupkar Alliance’ in different parts of J&K.
