Early Times Report POONCH, Dec 5: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Poonch of SKUAST-Jammu celebrated World Soil Day under the theme, 'Keep Soil Alive, Keep Protect Biodiversity.' The event was attended by more than 100 farm men and women of district Poonch. At the onset of programme, face cover masks were given to the farmers in view of Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing were maintained during the programme. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Muzafar Mir, Scientist, KVK Poonch educates the participants with the importance of celebrating the 5 December, as world Soil Day. He highlighted that the Soil biodiversity is major essential component of soil health and produces more nutritious and safer food i.e 95% of our food comes from soil. Soil is home of more than 25% of our planets biodiversity. 90% living organisms live or spent part of their life cycle in soils, yet we know only 1 per cent of this hidden universe. Soil biodiversity reflects the variability among organisms including micro-organisms not visible with the naked eye. While highlighting the role of organic manures and fertilizers, Dr. Muneeshwar Sharma, Scientist, KVK Poonch discussed the importance of organic fertilizer application to the soil which in return to add the organic matter to the soil, so that the production of crops increased manifold. He also highlighted the importance of soil testing so that the nutriment status of the soil can be ensuring through soil health card. |
