Was father-son duo playing ball with Mehbooba?

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 23: A day after the results of the recently held DDC polls were announced, subtle cracks within the Gupkar alliance became visible with the conglomerate leaders preferring to hold separate press conferences- eulogising self, more than the joint alliance.
The National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah dropped enough hints at a party function in Srinagar that the triumph that they registered during the polls was for the party and not for the alliance. The speeches of the father- son duo were clearly indicative of the fact that the National Conference believes it was the party’s victory more than that of the alliance.
“These elections are not the success of Dr Farooq, Omar, Sagar or any other NC leader, but it’s the victory of our ground level worker. This time, we didn’t publish posters and never went for campaigning. The only thing we did was that we told our local level leaders to tell workers that it was a fight to get back our lost identity,” Omar said. He added that entering into an alliance wasn’t so easy. “In last Parliamentary polls, we were against each other everywhere. But for the larger interests of J&K and its people, we decided to leave aside our differences.
Our leaders offered huge sacrifices by not contesting in the seats where they were strong as we left seats for alliance leaders,” the NC vice-president was quoted as having said by the local news agencies.
His father and party president Dr Farooq Abdullah dropped one more hint forging alliance with other political parties in the DDC polls was a very tough decision but it was taken for the larger interests of people of J&K. “It was difficult to forge an alliance with the parties that were the rivals of NC. But a decision was taken in the large interests of people of J&K,” Farooq said.
A senior political functionary highlighted how the statements of Omar and Farooq Abdullah are indicative of the fact that the alliance could no longer exist in times to come. ”If there would have been an alliance of sincerity, the leaders including Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah, Sajad Lone and others would have held a joint press conference presenting a unanimous face before the masses. However, what we have seen today is worrying in more ways than one. It looks like the father son duo is playing a ball with Mehbooba,” says the leader.
A PDP leader told Early Times while pleading anonymity that many in the party were expecting that a day after the results, the PAGD leaders would hold a joint press conference in which unity would have been exhibited. However, says the leader, the heads of the amalgam especially Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah were busy singing their own praises and even were casting indirect jibes at the alliance.
Meanwhile, the coming political situation is going to be interesting to watch. Will the alliance go in tatters or remain intact? The time will answer this soon.
