Independents scuttling PAGD’s attempt to capture DDCs in Valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 26: Notwithstanding allegations of National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, many newly elected members of the District Development Councils (DDCs) are ready to support the Apni Party. With many Independents willing to join the Apni Party, attempt of the Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) to capture all Valley based DDCs likely to be sabotaged. Instead of supporting the PAGD the newly elected Independent DDC members preferred to join the Apni Party which is all-out to rope in these members to form DDCs in some districts. On Saturday Bilqees Jan, DDC member from Zainpora-I district Shopian joined Apni Party. Jan has contested DDC elections from Zainpora-I in district Shopian as an Independent candidate. From the day one when results of the DDCs elections were declared, many Independent members have shown their willingness to join the Apni Party. Independents account for 18 percent of the total of 278 elected DDC members. Out of 14 DDC seats in Srinagar, Independents have won seven. The PAGD and Apni Party have bagged three seats each. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) won the remaining seat. Meanwhile former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday blamed that the administration is using police to force the entry of PAGD winning candidates into the Apni party. He alleged that the process started from Shopian as the two senior NC leaders were detained by police for no reason. Due to the coercion one woman joined the Apni Party. “Why anti-defection law not being implemented to disqualify candidates switching parties” he questioned. |
