Fake number plates put security grid on alert in Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 26: Amid intelligence inputs that terror groups may use vehicles with fake registration number plates in Jammu, a security alert has been sounded across the winter capital. Sources said the intelligence agencies have got credible inputs that terror groups may use fake number plates for travel or transportation of their logistics including arms and ammunitions. Sources said the security grid has been beefed in the wake of two incidents of use of fake number plates in Jammu having come to fore. Sources said in one of the cases, the intelligence agencies have inputs that terrorists had used a vehicle with fake number plate, in a bid to travel out of Jammu but were subsequently neutralized at Nagrota toll post in November. Sources said in another incident it was found that a SUV was bearing a fake registration number in the winter capital in broad daylight. Interestingly, while the vehicle used by terrorists, it is suspected, may have travelled to Punjab a fortnight before the Nagrota incident, the SUV was bearing a fake number plate of the same neighboring state. Sources said the vehicle was caught by an alert officer of the Traffic Police. Sources said while imposing E Challan, the officer found that the Mahindra Xylo was bearing a fake number plate. Sources said as the Jammu Police is already probing “Punjab angle of a recent terror related incidents,” the seizure of the SUV with fake number plate of Punjab has added to the “seriousness of the case.” It was reliably learnt that Jammu and Kashmir Police will intensify the drive to examine veracity of number plates of vehicles plying in Jammu. “They (terrorists) are trying to make use of fake number plates and this is something that is being put check at,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. |
