Ignored by Anantnag admin, villagers clear roads voluntarily

SAAHIL SUHAIL
Early Times Report
ANANTNAG, Jan 7: With district administration turning a blind eye towards their woes, villagers of Kasnard Khiram in this South Kashmir district began to clear the snow bound roads. Kasnard Khiram, where Gujjars mostly reside is just five kilometers away from tehsil headquarter Srigufwara.
"From last four days, we were approaching the authorities and requesting them to clear the snow that had accumulated on the road but each time they ignored us which now compelled us to clear this road voluntarily," Bashrat Chouhan, who led the team of volunteers told Early Times over phone.
Basharat said that the villagers had even approached political leaders and particularly to those who were recently elected but all of them couldn't ease out their sufferings. "A number of villagers are ill here and they need consultation with doctors. Since we don't have any health facility here so it compelled us to begin cleaning the road so that ill and our elders can move to Khiram village," residents said.
They said that during the last four days the snow-clearance machines cleared Khiram-Srigufwara road multiple times and left back to Anantnag without clearing roads that connect Gujjar-bastis with Khiram Village. Residents said that they requested Deputy Commissioner Anantnag multiple times but all in vain as the road continues to remain under snow.
In a similar case, the residents of Utrasoo Nigigund in Shangus also removed the snow from their road voluntarily with shovels after the administration failed to clear it. The residents had been requesting the administration for the last three days. In Anantnag town, several residents were also spotted while clearing the snow from lanes voluntarily throughout the day.
Yesterday, due to the apathy of district administration, the residents of Vail Nagbal Aishmuqam evacuated a patient to hospital on a ChairPoy. Residents of far-flung areas of Anantnag continue to face hardships due to non-clearance of roads and non-availability of electricity. The district administration meanwhile in a communiqué claimed to have cleared 78 roads out of 82.
