Withdraw FIRs against scribes: TMF | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 31: Team Mask Force Chairman Vijay Sharma expressed his anguish on registration of FIRs against journalists who reported in farmer’s agitation case. He said this is an effort to browbeat and stifle media “The Fourth Pillar of Democracy “. That FIRs have been booked under as many as 10 different provisions including sedition laws, promoting communal disharmony, and insulting religious beliefs, is further disturbing, they said in a statement. IWPC( Indian Women’s Press Corps) also said action against senior Journalists like Mrinal Pande was a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the situation and hers and the others reputations. Sharma demanded immediate withdrawal of the cases and supported the demand for a special law to protect media persons from arbitrary charges, arrests and prosecution for doing their job. Editor Guild further in a statement added that such action was intended to prevent media from working as an “independent watchdog of Indian democracy and reiterated its demand for the higher judiciary to take cognisance of repeated use of sedition charges to impede freedom of speech. |
