Amid privatisation clatter, Power Deptt employees face salary crisis | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 2: Amid clatter for privatisation of the Power Department, newly created power corporations in Jammu and Kashmir have failed to disburse regular salaries to over 30,000 employees for the past two months. According to sources, over 30,000 workers in Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) have not received their salaries for December and January months. “The employees including the senior officials such as Executive Engineers as well as Chief Engineers have been facing hurdles on account of regular payment of salaries,” an official said. Sources further disclosed that usually the salary of the staff is met out of “Grant in Aid” from the government and same is regulated on advance drawl basis at Secretariat level. “The procedure of giving salary through Grant-in-Aid, is bit ineffective as final settlement of expenditure accounts throughout the J&K is still pending from the date of emergence of corporations”, the sources said, adding that due to delay in regular disbursement of the salaries, the employees are facing hiccups to regularly pay EMIs, tuition fee of children and other monthly expenditures. “On one hand government is claiming that once the privatisation would be done the financial condition of the institution will improve but as expected by the employees and officials, the privatisation move has proved detrimental to the interests of the workforce and the delay in providing salaries is outcome of the same”, the employees said. They further informed that in the present Union Budget 2021, the Union government has given thrust on privatisation of various sectors including the Power Sector but the employees are opposing such moves tooth and nail. “The government should ensure that the salaries of the employees and officials should be paid in time rather than presenting the privatising as panacea of every problem”, the employees said. |
