Jammu, Mar 10: Press Information Bureau, Jammu, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India organized a Webinar today on ‘Women Empowerment in India’. The webinar focussed on the principle of gender equality enshrined in the Indian Constitution and the steps to be taken to end gender discrimination in India. In his keynote address, Bhat Iqbal Majeed, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Central University of Jammu said that the biggest aim of conducting such webinars is to spread awareness among the women related to the gender discrimination and to make them aware of the various laws and legislations within the framework of Indian political and judicial system that are at the front to end such inequalities. During the webinar, Rajni Bala, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Government Degree College, Ghagwal, Jammu said that patriarchy still exists in our society which acts as a barrier restricting the implementation of laws and legislations related to gender equality. Heena Qadir, Assistant Professor, Department of sociology, Government Degree College, Awantipora, Kashmir while addressing the webinar emphasised that the Indian Constitution in its various parts and articles be that Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties etc ensure equality to women and address their issues in a legalised manner. The important thing is to ensure that the women have all the awareness of these constitutional guarantees so that they will feel empowered in every respect, she added. Khursheed Yousuf, Field Publicity Officer, Udhampur said that while visible gains in women empowerment have been made through legal reforms, human development etc, the country still has a long way to go in many areas of women empowerment.
