Pak Army chief’s statement a ‘shocker’ for PDP, separatists | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 19: Publically the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has endorsed Pakistan Army chief’s statement on improving relations with India but internally ‘U turn by General Qamar Jawad Bajwa has shocked separatist and main-stream Kashmir centric political groups. Not only General Bajwa even Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has also shunned its adamant approach and offered to improve ties with India without raking up issues like abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K into two Union Territories (UT). After August 5, 2019 decisions of the Parliament, Kashmir centric parties especially PDP and separatist groups were hoping that Pakistan would take confrontation with India but all their hopes were shattered after recent statements of Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan and followed by General Bajwa. Advocating for peace in the sub-continent, General Bajwa on Thursday said it was time for New Delhi and Islamabad to “bury the past and move forward”. Addressing the Islamabad Security Dialogue, Bajwa added that stable Indo-Pak relations were the key to unlocking the potential of South and Central Asia by ensuring connectivity between East and West Asia The term “bury the past” used by General Bajwa was a clear indication that Pakistan’s political and military establishments have reconciled with the fact that restoration of Article 370 was impossible in the erstwhile state of J&K so it is better to forget these issues. After Pakistan’s U turn on J&K, Mehbooba Mufti was left with no other option but to hail the initiatives. She said Bajwa’s statement calling for better ties with India has provided a “good opportunity” for the two nations to set aside hostilities and find a lasting solution to the Kashmir problem. “A good opportunity for India & Pakistan to set aside hostilities & find a long lasting solution vis-a-vis Kashmir,” Mehbooba said in a tweet. “Both countries have huge military budgets to outdo each other when the same resources can instead be used on common challenges like poverty, education & healthcare,” she added. |
