Truckers Skipping Covid Test
4/18/2021 11:39:01 PM
The shocking revelation has come to fore that out of 3500 truckers entering J&K daily only 150 undergo a COVID-19 test. The Jammu and Kashmir government has made the test mandatory for the people entering the union territory.
Samples of people entering J&K are taken at Lakhanpur before they are allowed to proceed further. How come truckers are being allowed to move on without testing needs to be looked into? If the truckers keep on entering J&K without being tested they can turn out to be super spreaders as they travel to different corners of the union territory and mingle with people. The COVID-19 second wave has already wreaked havoc and is spreading at faster pace than the first wave. Medicos and experts are advising the people to take extra precautions. A recent report by the Lancet Covid-19 Commission had warned that the lethal second wave of Coronavirus will likely claim nearly 1,750-2,320 lives per day in India by the first week of June 2021, if proper steps are not immediately taken to curb its spread. The second wave also took less than 40 days to reach the 80,000 mark, from 10,000 new cases per day in February to 80,000 new cases per day in April. In September last year this journey had taken 83 days. The J&K government is aware about the second wave of COVID-19 spreading like a wild fire and it has taken enough steps during the past few weeks to contain the spread of the virus. It’s strange that despite taking stringent measures to keep the COVID-19 under check the truckers have been missed. It appears that second COVID wave could prove more deadly. The experts are urging people to stick to basics like wearing masks, maintaining social distance and washing hands regularly. The government has also restricted the number of people attending the social gatherings to one hundred only, schools have been closed and for time being fairs and exhibitions too have been called off. If the COVID graph keeps on rising there is every possibility about the government taking many more steps to ensure the safety of people. In coming days we may see that number of trucks and other vehicles entering J&K may decline as the government could restrict the number of vehicles entering the union territory. Experts are of the opinion that next two months are crucial and the government may have to put in place more stringent measures to contain the COVID-19.
