Online Shakespeare Day celebrations held

Jammu, Apr 23: The Literary Club of Government College of Education, Jammu, organized an online competition based on the famous characters created by Shakespeare to commemorate his birth anniversary.
The participants from different colleges delivered the famous speeches of popular characters by Shakespeare. The objective of the program was to apprise the students about real life skills through knowing the philosophy of the great dramatist, to develop communication skills through dialogue delivery and to make them understand the role of drama in developing language competence.
A total number of eighteen students portrayed characters ranging from Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Miranda, Romeo, Juliet, Claudius, Demetrius, King Lear, Titania etc.
The principal of the college Dr Kulwinder Kour, in her message, lauded the efforts of the literary club for organizing such program and giving the students a platform for showcasing their talent.
She also stated that universal writers like Shakespeare teach us to realize our innate virtues and vices and thus prepare us to face the challenges of life. She exhorted the students to keep on participating in such events.
Later on, Prof C L Shivgotra, senior faculty of the college also apprised the students about the importance of classic literature in today’s mechanized world. He added that especially, during the present context it is important for us to keep our spirit high and literature helps us in looking at life from a holistic aspect.
He congratulated the organizing team headed by Prof Shalini Rana for coming up with such a creative program.
The performance of the students was adjudged by Dr Amitabh Vikram Dwivedi, HOD, School of Linguistics, SMVDU, Katra, Prof Deep Kumar Bangotra of GCOE, Jammu and Dr Shweta Awasthi, School of languages, Uttarakhand Sanskrit University Haridwar. The judges also highlighted Shakespeare’s contribution in world literature. The program was attended by Dr Tahira Shah, Prof Seema Kumari, Prof. Surita Sharma and others. Around hundred participants from different colleges attended the online program on Google meet.
The top positions were bagged by Sabya and Simran Kour for portraying Lady Macbeth, second position was shared by Aman Kanathia and Richa Anand for playing the role of Romeo and Juliet. Ravinder Rao and Sapna bagged the third place for portraying King Lear and Miranda respectively. Aiuash Sudan got the 4th position for delivering famous speech of Anthony and Rumeeta got 5th position for playing the role of Portia from the play Merchant of Venice.
