Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 28: Finally, Jammu and Kashmir government has taken a drastic measure to crack the whip against political favoritism in sports-related activities in the erstwhile state, sending the previous regimes, who used the sector as a rehabilitation scheme for their chosen ones, into a tizzy.
Reports inform that in a major decision to reduce political interference in the Games, Jammu and Kashmir government has decided that there will no longer be entry of political influencers in various sports associations in the state and that non-political participation certificate will have to be obtained from the Deputy Commissioner to become an official of sports associations.
This decision, as per the reports, has been taken at the 57th journal body meeting of the Sports Council. The Sports Council on Tuesday issued a circular regarding streamlining the work of sports associations. As per the circular, new guidelines related to sports associations have been issued and that elections of sports associations will now be held in the presence of independent observers on postal ballot paper.
The sports federations will be given annual grants based on their performance and for national and zonal level competition, sports associations will not be able to organize camps for less than 21 days. The registration fee of the sports associations has been fixed at Rs 50 thousand, while the annual renewal fee will be Rs 10 thousand.
The players participating in the national competition will be given a medical fitness certificate from an authorized doctor. Sports associations should be represented in ten districts, as per the circular and it should have five Kashmir and five from Jammu division.
Furthermore, players participating in national and zonal level competition will be given insurance protection from the association. Players at the national and international level will have the right to vote in the sports association’s main executive body and that sports associations will be able to register players based on the performance of players in sports competitions.
As per the new guidelines, the sports associations will have to make the trial public two weeks in advance.
Furthermore, the Jammu and Kashmir government has taken a major decision for the players as it has decided that excellent players will get employment under sports quota under SRO 309 in the state. The government has also included five new sports in the category. This includes baseball, netball, triathlon, pancake silat and ice hockey. This decision of the government will not only play a major role in development of these games, but will also increase the trend towards sports among the youth.
Earlier, political interference is attributed as a major cause for various sports activities to fail on the ground with funds worth crores otherwise meant for the development of sports in the erstwhile state were either embezzled or misappropriated. There is a case already registered with the probe agencies against NC Patriarch Dr Farooq Abdullah related to the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association Scam.
