DC orders probe after families allege non-availability of ventilators | COVID-19 deaths at GMC Anantnag | | SAAHIL SUHAIL EARLY TIMES REPORT
ANANTNAG, May 18: Deputy Commissioner (District Magistrate) Anantnag, Dr Piyush Singla on Tuesday ordered an enquiry after families, who lost their members due to COVID-19, alleged that mismanagement and non-availability of ventilators was causing deaths. Deputy Commissioner Anantnag issued a detailed order and directed Principal Medical College Anantnag to constitute a team of specialist doctors for probing the incident in which a person lost his mother and sister-in-law due to Covid-19. The order says that an in-depth enquiry has become necessary to check the veracity of the allegations besides establishing facts and fixing the responsibility. The order directs the Principal GMC Anantnag to constitute a team of specialist doctors who shall conduct in-depth enquiry, fix responsibility if any, and suggest measures for avoiding such incidents in future. “The enquiry report must reach this office within 3 days positively,” reads the order. Pertinent to mention here, the families whose members died due to COVI-19 at GMC Anantnag, held a protest and alleged that mismanagement and non-availability of ventilators was causing deaths. “There is no ventilation available in the hospital despite the fact that this hospital was provided with over 25 ventilators last year,” they alleged. They said that paramedical staff deployed at GMC Anantnag were ‘arrogant and ignorant’ and even misbehaving with the patients. Asif Nazir, whose father, Nazir Ahmad Tinda, died in the Covid isolation ward of the hospital after remaining in observation for six days, rued that the hospital authorities have left the Covid patients at the mercy of attendants, unskilled para-medics and junior residents. “Senior doctors never come to visit patients at GMC Anantnag. Whole COVID-19 ward is being handed over to a junior resident doctor every evening,” he alleged. They said that even reports of tests aren’t being provided timely to patients and even tests aren’t being conducted. “The COVID tests reports are also being misplaced. The departments lack coordination and cooperation,” they said, adding basic medicines weren’t even available for Coronavirus patients at GMC Anantnag. Meanwhile, Principal Medical College Anantnag, Dr Showket Jeelani rebutted the claims and allegation of families and said that doctors and paramedical staff were working up to expectations. “We have eight high end ventilators and all of them functioning properly,” he told the media.
