Militancy and crime in Kashmir
5/28/2021 12:08:15 AM
The crime rate witnessing an increase in Kashmir amidst COVID-19 crisis is a cause of concern.
During the past few weeks cases of rape, abduction and black marketing have been reported from different areas of the Valley.
The gun culture has ruined the society in Kashmir and the increase in crime rate is a direct consequence of the militancy in the Valley.
Pakistan has kept the pot boiling in Kashmir for the past three decades and it continues to push in militants and is still leaving no stone unturned to radicalize the youth in Kashmir.
People in Kashmir should understand that gun and violence have not served any purpose and it has exposed the entire society to crimes. The militancy has to end for the crime graph to decline in the Valley.
During the past 30-years Kashmir has witnessed senseless violence and bloodshed. Pakistan has used Kashmiri youth as cannon fodder and has fought its own proxy war by using Kashmiris.
As the security forces have wiped out militants and their supporters in Kashmir, the criminal elements have become active as the crime has made deep inroads into the society.
For the crime rate to drop, people of Kashmir need to stop supporting the militants and acknowledge the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and no power on earth can snatch it.
The civil society needs to play a positive role to keep youth away from guns and violence. The religious scholars should come forward to make the younger generation aware about the moral values and importance of education. If the youth keep on going astray, Kashmir can turn into a lawless land where crime can become an order of the day. Law enforcing agencies are doing their job but people have to take the responsibility. They have to keep a close vigil over their wards. They have to ensure that they don’t become drug addicts and habitual criminals.
Recently, a rape case came to fore in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, a girl was allegedly raped in a truck. The accused were arrested but the incident sent shockwaves across the union territory as the incident happened in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis that has engulfed the entire J&K.
Kashmir civil society needs to wake up before it becomes too late.
