Take adequate steps to save paddy belt of Suchetgarh : Tony
6/18/2021 10:53:28 PM
Early Times Report

Suchetgarh, June 18: District Development Council (DDC) Member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony raised serious concern over the problems being faced by the farmers due to defunct lift irrigation system in the border belt of Suchetgarh.
The DDC member took up this issue with the Chief Engineer Irrigation and apprised him of the issues being faced by the farmers of border belt.
Today, DDC member Tony along with officials of Tubewell Irrigation and Lift Irrigation conducted a tour of border belt and visited various villages wherein lift Irrigation system has been defunct since long including Sai, Nikowal, Burejal, Devigarh and Beaspur and also took stock of the defunct tubewells.
DDC member TS Tony said that there is dire need to rectify the defunct lift irrigation system machines at Sai, Nikowal and Beaspur besides construction of Chak Dams as that would resolve the water crisis in the area thus providing great relief to the farmers who have already suffered a lot. These are the main sources of irrigation if these were defunct then what would be fun about staying here? He questioned.
The DDC member asked the authorities as to how the lack of irrigation facilities have resulted in changing the whole paddy belt into barren land. He appealed to the officials of Irrigation Department to create channels for irrigation purposes which are pending since long.
Besides, he also laid stress upon desilting of D-17 canal coming from Kotli Jabowal to Sai and the same should be restored immediately.
The DDC member appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to sanction adequate funds to save the paddy belt, otherwise if the same position continues for some more time, the day would not be far when people of Suchetgarh will give up the farming activity for want of adequate irrigation facilities.
He hoped that the Deputy Commissioner will take cognizance of this very significant issue of the food producers of border belt Suchetgarh failing which they will be compelled to give up farming.
Among others who accompanied the DDC member included Soba Singh, Sarpanch Sarabjeet Singh, Sarpanch Shashi Kumar, Capt Kamal and Kuldeep, Bodh Raj and Ch Chela Singh.
