6/20/2021 11:38:53 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, June 20: The physical health benefits of yoga, like increased strength, flexibility and balance have long been known and accepted. However, in recent years scientists and researchers have also begun looking at the affect that yoga can have on our mental and emotional health. Their studies have since shown that yoga is also helpful in managing stress, anxiety and improving overall mood.
Yoga allows individuals to find an inner peace that is not ruffled and riled by the endless stresses and struggles of life and a new kind of freedom that one may not have known even existed. With the aim to be able to deal with stress as and when it arises and not to imprint and accumulate it in the body’s various systems, GDC Vijaypur organized a One-day virtual workshop on the topic Yoga for Emotional Stability in which
Principal of the College, Prof. (Dr.) Sangeeta Sudan said that, “because of this fast life, we are neglecting the body and mind as a consequence of which they are beginning to pull each other in opposite directions, dissipating our energy. As a result we become careless, callous and stressed. So make sure that we get enough quiet time to truly rest and relax.” She further said that a restorative yoga practice is a great way to calm the mind and nervous system, manage stress and emotional disturbances. A restorative yoga sequence usually involves fewer poses that are fully supported by props to allow individuals of all level and ability to rest comfortably for longer periods of time- about five minutes or more. This allows the body and mind to settle, soften and become quiet providing emotional stability.
Dr. Shittal Sharma (HOD Mathematics) coordinated the virtual workshop and in her welcome address she stressed upon the need and various benefits of yoga in our life in these COVID times. She said that for maintaining emotional stability we need to maintain balance between our physical and mental well being and that is possible by practicing yogaasanas regularly. Different types of “Surya Namaskars” were performed by Rameshwar Singh Samyal, Computer Assistant followed by a beautiful poem on “Importance of Yoga” recited by Dr. Kuldeep Singh (HOD Punjabi). Prof. Poonam Kundan (HOD Environmental Sciences) delivered a presentation on the theme “Yoga for Emotional Stability” in which she emphasized upon various yoga practices/asanas which include Anulom-Vilom, Pranayama, Meditation etc. and the benefits of practicing these asanas to maintain emotional stability. She concluded her presenation with a quote from the Bhagavad Gita “ Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self”.
