Protection of displaced communities entails reservation in political, social, educational sphere: Sanjeev Sharma | | | Early Times Report
Poonch, June 20: Highlighting the plight of POJK displaced community, Sanjeev Sharma held a press conference on various issues entwined with the larger participation of this vulnerable group on the socio-political landscape of the country. At the outset, he appreciated the present dispensation of extending rehabilitation package to POJK families but at the same time he underlined that financial aid is just a tip of the iceberg towards addressing problems faced by POJK families since 1947. The 183rd Report of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs on problems being faced by Refugees and POJK displaced communities, 2014 and Wadhwa Committee Report, 2007 succinctly underlined the need of providing reservations to the wards of POJK families in professional and technical colleges across country. What is more worrisome is that till date no notification has been issued to even invite applications for registration of properties in their name. Most notably, after the reorganisation of J&K State, the central government has provided certain benefits to the marginalised sections especially in the context of civil and political rights. The case of West Pakistan Refugees and reservations to SC’s and ST’s in the J&K Assembly is notable in this regard. Most notably, 24 seats are kept vacant for POJK areas in the J&K assembly. At this juncture, it is important to mention that when POJK displaced families are staying in J&K and other parts of the country what is the logic behind keeping the POJK seats vacant. At least one third of 24 seats i.e., 8 seats must be opened and filled with the POJK representatives. The social and economic empowerment of this vulnerable lot has positive correlation with their political empowerment, he added. He also highlighted that the current policy of dispensation of package to the head of the family as mentioned in old records needs to be revisited as since then the displaced families have branched out and the disbursed amount seems insufficient in light of number of family members and inflation since then. |
