Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 21 : The Jammu & Kashmir today removed Dr. Showkat Ahmad Jeelanl as Principal, Government Medical College, Anantnag and posted him as Secretary Technical in the Department.
The department of Health and Medical Education also now assigned the charge of Principal Medical College Anantnag to Dr Tariq Syed Qureshi who heads the department of Ophthalmology in GMC Srinagar.
In this regard, Additional Chief Secretary and Financial Commissioner (Health and Medical Education) Atal Dulloo issued an order 454-JK (HME) of 2021 dated 21-06-2021 to affect the transfer of Principal, Government Medical College Anantnag.
“Dr. Showkat Ahmad Jeelanl, Principal, Government Medical College Anantnag is transferred and posted as Secretary Technical in the Health and Medical Education Department with immediate effect,” reads the order.
The order says that during his posting as Secretary Technical in the Health and Medical Education Department, his salary shall be drawn against the post of Principal, Government Medical College Anantnag.
Dr. Tariq Syed Qureshi shall continue to draw his salary against the post of Professor, Department of Ophthalmology in Government Medical College Srinagar during the period he holds the post of Principal, Government Medical College, Anantnag, the order added.
Important mention here, Dr. Jeelani hogged the headlines after mismanagement in Government Medical College Anantnag surfaced particularly during COVIOD-19 pandemic causing deaths. Last month, Dr. Jeelani even misled Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha over the availability of ICU beds in GMC Anantnag. During the visit, Dr Jeelani informed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha that the hospital has a facility of 40 ICU beds for COVID-19 infected patients.
A day later, The Jammu and Kashmir Government constituted a committee to ascertain the actual number of intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds at Government Medical College Anantnag. “The committee reported factual positions and the report submitted by the committee exposed him and proved his claims incorrect,” an officer told Early Times.
Last week, Additional Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Ghulam Hassan Sheikh paid a surprise visit to GMC Anantnag and found 22 doctors including HOD’s absent from duties. Dr. Jeelani, instead of taking action against absentees, called the officials of Anantnag administration ‘childish’ and alleged that the officers were interfering in GMC Anantnag unnecessarily.
