Ramp up RTPCR testing rate | | | After the J&K Government has fixed the rate of RTPCR test at Rs 400, private laboratories that used to charge anything between Rs 1600/ to Rs 1800/ are not conducting that many tests. The testing rate has even declined in the government run hospitals. The Director Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) has expressed concern over not many tests being conducted in the Valley and has instructed the Chief Medical Officers to ramp up the testing. In Jammu also the testing rate is not that high. It seems that after the second wave has relented, people have started believing that the COVID-19 is over and they need not worry, but the fact is that the situation is still grim. Experts have predicted that there is a possibility about third wave of COVID-19 breaking out and people need to take precautions. To get tested is the biggest precaution as one comes to know his status as the asymptomatic patients in the past have proved to be super spreaders. So there can be no compromise on testing it has to continue till the virus is defeated. After the Centre has taken over the vaccination drive the issue of shortage of the COVID-19 jabs has been addressed. There is enough stock of vaccines and people are coming forward to get vaccinated. We are on the path to defeat the virus, but there are concerns that the new variant of the virus has got activated and it could prove deadly than the variants that have been detected so far. Some experts are claiming that the new variant is so deadly that even the vaccines may not be that effective. Already the first case of deadly Delta Plus variant of COVID-19 has been detected in Jammu. Detection of this variant amid threat of the possible third wave is a warning sign. The second wave took everyone by surprise as after the first wave had declined, people had started taking everything for granted. The RTPCR is a reliable test as it detects the virus even if the load is low. The Rapid Action Test (RAT) is not that reliable. So the focus of the government should remain on the RTPCR test. The government should seek an explanation from the private laboratories for not conducting the RTPCR at the government approved rates. |
