Maharaja Hari Singh pride of Jammu | | | Rahul Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 31: As September 23—birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh—is coming closer we the people of Jammu are hoping that the government will fulfill its promise of announcing a gazetted holiday on his birthday. Maharaja Hari Singh played a great role in establishing the legacy of Dogras across J&K. People friendly decisions taken by him helped in changing the destiny of the masses of the erstwhile princely state. After ascending to the throne of Jammu and Kashmir in 1925 he made primary education compulsory in the state. He introduced laws prohibiting child marriage, and opened places of worship to the low castes. In 1930, Hari Singh, attended the First Round Table Conference in London. He suggested that the Indian Princely states would join an “All India Federation '' and pleaded for equal status for Indians in the British Commonwealth of Nations. In 1947 when the tribals from Pakistan tried to invade Kashmir, Mahraja Hari Singh, entered into an agreement with the Union of India to prevent the enemy country from annexing Jammu and Kashmir. His contribution towards J&K’s development has been immense and everyone has recognized it. We the people of Jammu are proud of our late Maharaja, who took bold decisions, to keep the legacy of Dogras alive. The government should announce a holiday on his birthday to honour him and to address the aspirations of Dogras. |
