Even after 7-yrs, landslide-hit Saddal village awaits rehabilitation
9/7/2021 11:37:55 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 7: On Monday survivors of ill-fated Saddal village organized a prayer meeting to pay tributes to forty inhabitants- who were buried alive during a devastating landslide in the intervening night of September 5 and 6, 2014.
Even after the passing of seven long years, the survivors are still waiting for proper rehabilitation due to the casual approach being adopted by those at the helm of the affairs.
Fed up with the repeated promises of the authorities, the inhabitants have recently approached the Court to get justice.
On September 3, Division Bench of High Court comprising Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Sanjay Dhar has issued directions for the completion of rehabilitation work as early as possible.
It’s been seven years when Saddal-Panjar village of Moungri tehsil in Udhampur district was destroyed due to landslides. The survivors are still looking to the government to fulfill its promise of permanent and “smarter” rehabilitation.
After the devastating landslide, it was that the Saddal village would be converted into a smart model village. However, no action has been taken on ground to date.
It was announced that 135 hutments and 135 toilets would be constructed with the participation of the district administration for the resettlement of villagers. However, no action has been taken on the ground till date and the residents are living in inhuman conditions in different areas.
As per reports, for the last seven years, 45 families and 87 families have been camping in two different areas of Udhampur.
On September 6 in 2014, at least 40 villagers were buried alive after the entire Saddal village in the Panchari Hills of Udhampur came under landslides following incessant rains.
