Cong high-command ditches Azad yet again | DMK candidate elected unopposed for Rajya Sabha | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 28: All hopes of veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad for re-elections in the Rajya Sabha were dashed as two DMK candidates for Rajya Sabha seats were elected unopposed from Tamil Nadu. Instead of accommodating Azad from Tamil Nadu, Congress high-command once again ditched its veteran leader for heading a group of dissidents in the party. Highly placed sources said that Azad was hoping that Congress high command would bargain with coalition partner DMK for his Rajya Sabha. “Even DMK was also interested to accommodate Ghulam Nabi Azad as Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu but it was all due to attitude of Congress high command that party (DMK) fielded its own candidates on both the seats”, sources said. Insiders in Congress said that DMK had given a proposal to the Congress leadership to field a minority candidate. This proposal was given only to accommodate Ghulam Nabi Azad but Congress leadership did not give any serious thought to this proposal. Meanwhile, K Srinivasan of Secretary of Tamil Nadu Assembly, who is also the returning officer for the by elections, announced that candidates sponsored by DMK have been duly elected unopposed. Munusamy and Vaithilingam quit the RS membership and got elected to the State Assembly, necessitating by elections for the two seats. The DMK had announced its candidates for both seats from Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha by-election, effectively scrapping any chance for partner Congress to bag a seat. Dr. Kanimozhi NVN Somu, the medical wing secretary and a practicing gynecologist, and the party’s East district’s secretary KRN Rajeshkumar Namakkal were elected unopposed. According to Congress insiders name of former Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad names was doing the rounds for a possible Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu. While Azad, one of the senior-most leaders of the party, was needed to be accommodated, a group of young leaders had opposed this move. |
