Online fraudsters on prowl | | | The increase in online crimes has become a cause of concern for one and all. These crimes have increased due to increase in online platforms in day-to-day life. According to the information revealed by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Parliament over 93,000 online crimes were reported between 2017 and 2019. Quoting the data published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the MHA stated that the cybercrime cases registered in 2017, 2018 and 2019 were 21796, 27248 and 44546 respectively. An individual, organisation or a government can fall prey to cyber crimes. These can be of many types like financial fraud, invasion of privacy, illegal trade, online stalking, data theft, subversion and espionage. There have been many instances in the past where criminals by posing bank officials have extracted huge amounts from the accounts of the innocent people by making them reveal their account details. Not many criminals have been traced but the ones who were traced turned out to be the computer and internet experts. Instead of using technology in a positive way these criminals have misused the technology. Crimes such as revenge porn and slut shaming have also increased on social media platforms. In the recent past many controversies involving such incidents have surfaced. At present the entire world is trying to address the issue of cyber crime as till date no such mechanism has been devised that can prevent such crimes. Only way through which people can remain safe is by taking precautions and remaining alert. The law enforcing agencies keep on issuing advisories asking people not to fall in the trap of online fraudsters, who can hack their devices and retrieve their data from any location. The need of the hour is to create awareness as well as training law enforcement agencies and improve cyber forensic facilities including properly educating them on gender sensitisation. These steps would surely help to prevent such cases and expedite investigation. There are several laws to prevent such crimes. However, to tackle cybercrime is still a herculean task. After committing the fraud the criminal throws away the sim card, which he uses to con the people. Once the sim card is gone, it becomes difficult for the law enforcing agencies to trace the culprit. Sometimes these criminals act carelessly and end up getting caught but usually they do their homework well and get away. During the past few years, people have become aware of online frauds and have turned vigilant. But still a lot needs to be done to prevent cybercrimes and online frauds. Laws have to be made stringent and criminals need to be given stringent punishments. |
