Stuck in Kashmir for nonpayment of dues, non locals seek Amit Shah’s intervention | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 23: Even as scores of non-locals have been fleeing Kashmir in the wake of “target killings”, many of them are still “stranded helplessly” due to nonpayment of their dues by locals while the administration is allegedly silent on the issue. Scores of non –local laborers told Early Times that in the wake of recent spike in killings they were “worried and wanted to rush back to their native homes but that nonpayment of wages by contractors and others who had hired them for various works, mostly construction, has delayed their travel plans.” They appealed the Home Minister Amit Shah to personally look into the matter. A mason told Early Times that his “employer in Kashmir has not cleared his wages totaling to around Rs one lakh for a work done on contract.” “My payment was pending with him but now when I have to rush back to my home, he is unable to clear all my dues while the government is silent on the issue,” said the labourer. The laborers said it was unfortunate that the officials were silent on the issue of livelihood of the poor people. “The money which is stuck is our hard earned money which we earn after giving out sweat and blood but the babus don’t seem to realize this,” said a laborer from Tamil Nadu. He said the money they would earn in Kashmir used to run their entire family back home for the whole year. “If we don’t get our dues, our families will die of starvation,” he added. Meanwhile, such stranded laborers have appealed Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is on a visit to Jammu and Kashmir to personally look into the matter. “The administration in Kashmir doesn’t seem to be bothered about out plight. On one hand we have a threat to our lives and on the other we are unable to leave for want of our wages. Hope Amit Shah ji helps us,” they said. The non-locals have been “bearing the brunt of target killings.” On October 17, two non-local labourers were gunned down by terrorists in Wanpoh area of Kulgam district. Another grievously wounded labourer was being treated for multiple injuries. The incident was the third attack on non-locals in Kashmir in two days. A street vendor from Bihar was killed in the Eidgah area of Srinagar a day before the incident. A carpenter from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh was killed at Litter in Pulwama district on the same day. So far, 11 people have been killed in targeted attacks in Kashmir, including five hailing from other states in the recent past. |
