Jammu University nowhere, KU scientists make it to Stanford database ! | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 25: Even as no scientists from Jammu university but nine from the University of Kashmir have figured in the research database of the Stanford University that ranks top- 2-percent of scientists worldwide, the development has yet again brought the plight of the varsity in the winter capital to spotlight. On October 25, Kashmir university proudly announced that nine of its scientists are ranked on the basis of some key indices, including publications and citations. The KU scientists figuring in the list, as per an official handout, include Prof Shakil A Romshoo and Prof Ghulam Jeelani from the Department of Earth Sciences, and Prof F A Masoodi, Dr Adil Gani and Dr Idrees Ahmed Wani from the Department of Food Science and Technology. Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, Dr Shabir Ahmad Parrah, Dr Ikhlaq Hussain and Dr Rouf Ahmad Rather (Research Assistant) from the departments of Zoology, Electronics & Instrumentation, Institute of Technology Zakura Campus and South Campus of the University, respectively, are other academics figuring in the list. No such handout, however was issued by the Jammu university, raising brows over the working the varsity. The database has listed about 25 scientists from Jammu and Kashmir in top 2 percent in their respective fields. Other prominent varsities whose faculty figure in the list include Jadavpur University, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi and University of Hyderabad. The Indian Institute of Sciences Bangalore ranks first among Indian institutions with 114 scientists in the list. But then that about the alleged falling standards of the Jammu university? Just last month, which is in September, the University of Jammu had fallen in the prestigious National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-2021, while Kashmir University has risen in the status. Performing even better, the University of Kashmir had figured among top 50 universities in the all-India ranking of varsities conducted by the Union Ministry of Education under NIRF-2021. But Jammu couldn’t make it the famous list as the varsity has slipped in the academic ratings. And now same seemingly holds true for the Stanford university listing. Its pertinent to mention that last month, when the NIRF list was released, globally acclaimed academic, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, who has previously served as the Vice Chancellor of the Jammu university, had expressed serious concern over the plight of the varsity. During Mattoo’s tenure, the Jammu varsity had scaled new heights of excellence. |
