SKUAST-J celebrates World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2021 | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 24: SKUAST-Jammu, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, RS Pura organized a lecture on the topic “Current scenario and strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance” in order to celebrate the “World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2021 (WAAW-2021)” and in line with the theme of WAAW-2021 as “Spread Awareness, Stop Resistance” announced by OIE, FAO and WHO. The programme was organized under the guidance and leadership of Prof JP Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-J. The lecture was delivered by Dr Pawan Kumar Verma, Assistant Professor, Division of Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology. At the outset, Dr. Ajay Kumar Gupta, HoD, Division of Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology welcomed the participants and gave a brief about the importance of the lecture. Dr. Verma during his lecture said that antimicrobial agents have been the one of the best strategies for the management of infectious diseases since their discovery in 1900. However, the indiscriminate and non-judicious usage of antibacterial agents has led to us on a cross-road as the effectiveness of currently used antimicrobials is decreasing substantially which is called as ‘Antimicrobial Resistance’. Although, development of resistance to antimicrobial drugs is a natural phenomenon but the inappropriate use of antimicrobial drugs for treatment of animals as well as humans, use of antimicrobials in growth promotion of poultry, inadequate sanitary conditions, poor infection prevention and control practices has accelerated the process of resistance development. The development of antimicrobials has played a significant role in combating the dreaded infectious disease such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, typhoid fever and meningitis in 20th century. A cooperative action at global level is a need of the hour to combat the anti microbial resistance (AMR). Faculty members, undergraduate students, master’s and doctoral scholars attended the lecture and they were inculcated with the goal of One Health Antimicrobial Stewardship to improve antimicrobial use and prescription across the spectrum of human, animals and environmental health to keep antibiotics effective for the treatment of human and animal infections. Dr Ajay Kumar Gupta, HoD, Division of Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology congratulated the speaker for the informative lecture and extended vote of thanks. |
