Azad following footsteps of Capt Amarinder Singh? | His loyalists stay away from ongoing party’s membership drive | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 26: On Wednesday with much “fanfare’ the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) launched a membership drive in Jammu and Kashmir to strengthen the party. The membership drive will be followed by organizational elections. Interestingly the membership drive was launched by PCC chief G A Mir along with leaders of his faction and those who owe their allegiance with Ghulam Nabi Azad were conspicuously absent from the event. The non-involvement of Azad loyalists in the membership drive raised many questions because this action will give a free hand to Mir to take full control of the party and install all his loyalists on all important positions of the party. The decision of the Azad loyalists not to participate in the membership drive has added fuel to the rumours that the former leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha is going to follow the foot-step of ex-Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh. After being “humiliated” by Congress high command, the political stalwart of Punjab, Capt. Amarinder Singh had resigned from the party and announced the formation of a regional party namely “ Punjab Lok Congress” to fight the coming assembly elections in Punjab. Although neither Azad nor his loyalists have confirmed the formation of a regional party in J&K before assembly elections, there is a strong rumour in the Congress circle regarding the formation of a new regional party to settle scores with Congress's high command. Sources said that Azad has already started discussions with potential leaders of other parties before taking any decision in this regard. “Recently Diwali-Milan programme organized by Ghulam Nabi Azad was a step towards starting interactions with leaders of other political parties”, sources said. On November 8, Azad organized the ‘Diwali Milan’ function to retrieve lost ground in Jammu province. As reported earlier by this newspaper, the former chief minister has decided to become active in J&K politics because the Congress high-command is unlikely to give any importance to Azad at national politics. “From day one after his retirement as leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Azad has shifted his focus on J&K”, a source said, adding, “Azad is already in touch with the potential leaders of other parties”. |
