JU organizes online awareness programme on ‘Ageing in India’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 13: Department of Sociology University of Jammu in collaboration with National Institute of Social Defence, MSJE and RRTC Anugraha organized an online awareness/sensitization programme on the theme ‘Ageing in India: Challenges of Elderly Women, Widows, Old Age Home Inmates and Suggested Interventions’ for students, Scholars and faculty members. Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar, University of Jammu was the Guest of Honour in the programme. Prof Jasrotia in his address appreciated the Department of Sociology for undertaking such types of awareness programmes. He highlighted various laws which can work for the betterment of elderly people. Further focusing on the various problems of the elderly people, he motivated the younger generation to come forward and contribute towards the social and psychological well-being of the elders. Prof. Vishav Raksha, Head, Department of Sociology and Director Centre for Women’s Studies was the resource person in the programme. Prof Vishav Raksha highlighted the problems and challenges being faced by elderly women. She discussed the problems of the various categories of women like widows, separated, divorced, etc. and highlighted the various barriers and difficulties these have to face especially in their old age. From her vast experience of the fieldwork, she shared various narratives making the session very interesting and thought-provoking. Dr. Hema Gandotra, Faculty, Department of Sociology was the second resource person. During her presentation, she highlighted the conditions of the inmates in the old age homes. Focussing on the demographic profile of the different old age homes in Jammu province, she not just spoke on the facilities and provisions provided to old age persons in these homes but also threw light on the important concept of “Oldage Homes as an Alternative to Family Institution”. Both the presentations were followed by a question-answer session. Abha Choudhary, Chairperson, RRTC was the moderator of the programme. Choudhary highlighted the need for such kinds of programmes and also shared certain video clips highlighting the work being undertaken by their organization for elderly people. Besides students and scholars, the representatives from various Non-Governmental organizations and Old age homes from across the country attended the programme. Among others who were present included Dr Kuljit Singh, Kajal Kalsi, Dr. Saranjit Kour, Diksha Nargotra and Dr Gopal Sharma.
