Scientists of SKUAST-J, Agricultural Officers visited Kandi villages | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 20: Dr. Pradeep Wali Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu along with K.R Sharma, Director Agriculture, Ram Savak Director Horticulture and Rajinder Singh, Director Command along with other officials visited Garkhal and Godhan village of Akhnoor tehsil of Jammu district and interacted beneficiaries of DST-SEED, New Delhi funded Project on "Demonstration of technologies for improving productivity of rainfed area in Jammu district". Dr. Pradeep Wali Director Research informed the gathering about the different activities and success story of the concluded project. Dr. R.K. Srivastava, Principal Investigator of the project briefed about activities done under the project which was concluded during March, 2021. Basic objectives of the project were to demonstrate soil and water conservation technologies at farmers' field and thereby improving livelihood in rainfed areas through crop diversifications. Under this project different soil and water conservation structures like poly tanks, percolation tanks, recharging pits, earthen embankment, woven wire stone filled check dam, gabions, roof water harvesting system, contour /compartmental bunding, continuous contour trenching and bench terracing system were constructed at project site. Portable sprinkler unit and gravity feed irrigation system were also installed at project site for improving water use efficiency. During the interaction; beneficiaries of the project shared their experience of vegetable cultivation in their fields and kitchen gardens by the judicious use of water conserved through technological interventions of the project. K.K. Sharma, Director Agriculture, Ram Savak Director Horticulture and Rajinder Singh Director Command interacted with the beneficiaries and appreciated farmers for initiating vegetable cultivation using water harvesting through poly tank and roof water harvesting system. All were of the opinion to replicate similar soil and water conservation technologies in other villages of Kandi area with the collaborative efforts of Department of Agriculture, Horticulture and Command Area with the possible inclusion and cooperation of Department of Rural Development through different centrally sponsored schemes. Experts suggested farmers to practice horticulture as fruit cultivation has immense potential in the area. They also suggested them to take full advantage of government schemes for initiating processing unit for horticultural produce. Dr. Vijay Bharti and Dr. Sushmita M. Dadhich, Co-PIs of the project and other officers of Department of Agriculture, Horticulture and Command Area were also present during the field visit. |
