It’s official: Jammu bearing brunt of power crisis, people suffer unheard | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 20: Even as the administration in J&K is trying to give a rosy picture of the power crises in the Union Territory, an official correspondence has exposed that the people of Jammu are facing the brunt of the “emergency.” The Managing Director Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited in an official document has said that there was a state of “emergency” in Jammu. In a letter vide number 124-MD/IPOCI dated the 20.12.2021, the MD said: “There is an emergency power situation in the Jammu province and the general public is facing the brunt of non-availability of power.” The shocking revelation has been made in the official correspondence about the issues being faced in charging of feeders. While the government has claimed that electricity has been restored in most parts, this documents exposed the grim reality of how the people of Jammu have been yet again left to fend for themselves. A major power breakdown has pushed large parts of the Union Territory to darkness as thousands of employees of the Power department have gone on indefinite strike. Around twenty-thousand employees are protesting against the move of the government to merge J&K Power Development Department into the Power Grid Corporation of India and the handing over of the assets to private companies. The protesters said the privatization of the assets of the power department would mean the power supply to consumers in Jammu and Kashmir will also be privatized. Several districts in Jammu and Kashmir have been complaining of major power outages while some areas have seen no electricity at all since the strike begun. The employees have been on strike from December 17 night. They have announced not to carry out any repair work or maintenance until the government accepts their demands. The protesters want a rollback of the government decision to privatize assets, regularisation of daily wage power employees, and the release of salaries. For the last three days the employees have been holding protests across the UT whereas from the field staff like linemen to inspectors to higher ups like engineers, the employees of the concerned department are on strike. Officials have been saying that negotiations were held with striking employees but failed to break the ice. |
