Slight improvement in Cold conditions in Kashmir, ahead of "Chillai-e-Kalan"

SRINAGAR, Dec 20: There is a slight relief from cold conditions in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as the mercury during the night showed improvement ahead of the 40-day-long coldest part of the winter begins December 21, a Meteorological Department office said.
Srinagar which experienced two consecutive coldest night of the season at -6.0 degree Celsius showed an improved of two notches and it was still minus 4.3 degree below normal for this time of the year, MeT office said.
The coldest part of the 40-day-long "Chillai-e-Kalan", start midnight tonight from December 21 to January 29 in Kashmir valley, which will be followed by a 20-day-long "Chillai Khurd" or small cold, that occurs from January 30 to February 18 and a 10-days-long "Chilia Bachha" or Baby cold from February 19 to February 28 every year.
A day ago the mercury had plummeted to minus 6.0 degrees Celsius in Srinagar was the lowest in the month of December so far was today recorded at minus 5.8 degree Celsius.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district was recorded at minus 5.5 against the minus 7.5 degree Celsius, up by 2.0 degree the previous night.
Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu National highway, had a low of minus 6.0 degree Celsius against the minus 6.5 degree Celsius on the previous night while Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 7.4 degree Celsius against the minus 8.7 degree Celsius which was -3 degree above normal on Sunday night.
Kokernag, in south Kashmir also showed a slight improvement, recorded a low of minus 5.9 degree Celsius against the minus 6.0 degree Celsius a day ago.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 5.2 degree Celsius against minus 6.1 degree Celsius the previous night.
The mercury also showed a slight improvement in Leh town in Ladakh Union Territory was recorded a low of minus 18.0 degree Celsius against last night's minus 19.5 degree Celsius while at Kargil it was recorded at minus 11.5 against minus 14.5 degree Celsius and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a low of minus 19.0 against minus 20.7 degree Celsius on Sunday.
