Senior Congress leaders visit Gharana Wetland to meet affected farmers | | | Early Times Report RS PURA, Dec 24: J&K PCC President G A Mir, JKPCC Working President Raman Bhalla along with former MP Tarlok Singh Bajwa, District Rural President Hari Singh Chib, General Secretary Manmohan Singh, DDC Member Taranjeet Singh Tony, Youth President Uday Bhanu Chib and others today visited the Gharana wetland to take first hand appraisal of the situation arising out of government's adamancy over the issue as the affected farmers are seeking adequate compensation by demanding land chunks in place of their land which has come under the project. The farmers told Mir that UT's administration is acting arbitrarily without honouring the law of the land as entire UT machinery including civil administration and police has despicably violated the court order by forcefully trespassing into the land chunks of farmers and starting fencing. The J&K PCC President extended wholehearted support to farmers affected by the government initiatives to develop the place which is one of the favourite destinations of the migratory birds visiting the country from Europe and other places. The JKPCC Chief assured that Congress will take every possible step to resolve the issue at the earliest. He however said that there is nothing so big in the demands of farmers therefore there is no reason that LG Sinha will deny to accede to demands. He said that farmers are demanding what they deserve and therefore their issue will be resolved on merits. Bhalla said that no doubt Gharana wetland has attained global recognition for being home to several types of migratory birds, but developmental plans to boost tourist influx, J&K administration cannot "turn a blind eye" to the issue of local residents losing a "huge portion of their land" for the same. Bhalla said that authorities must take into confidence the villagers and the residents of the area, have periodic meetings with them, seek their co-operation and support in the run up to the fulfillment of one of the most important projects concerning saving our rich natural legacy which not only needs to be preserved, protected and improved but rejuvenated in a sustainable manner. |
