KUPWARA, Dec 26: Two teenage boys are feared to have died after falling into a water storage tank today afternoon in Dardpora Kralpora in this frontier district of north Kashmir.
According to sources that four local boys were playing cricket today afternoon as it was Sunday, one of the boy hit the ball outside the ground that fell inside the water storage tank, after which they jumped into it to fetch the ball.
"Among four boys, two boys somehow managed to swim and they were immediately rescued by the locals, but unfortunately two were drowned and later their bodies were retrieved from water storage tank, said sources.
Sources identified the two boys as Amir Mohuiddin Khawaja son of Ghulam Mohuiddin Khawaja and Faheem Iqbal Khawaja son of Mohammad Iqbal Khawaja, residents of Maidan Pati Dardpora Kralpora (B), fell into a storage tank after the duo apparently went to fetch a cricket ball from the water source.
Local resident of Dardpora, Bashir Ahmad informed ET and said that soon as the news spread, locals started a rescue operation to retrieve the duo and by the time Police and Army had reached the spot and started rescue operation, adding unfortunately no one from SDRF reached in time to launch rescue operation as they are always late comers.
Locals said that, pall of gloom descended over the families of duo and in the whole area of Dardpora Kupwara. After completing the legal formalities, the bodies of two teenagers were handed over by police to the families for last rites.
There is no one who could make these local contractor's accountable, adding both the SDRF men and contractors takes every matter far granted, said locals.
It is pertinent to mention here that, this is not the first such case in Kupwara, but many such incidents have occured so for in this north Kashmir district due to the negligence of contractors who left the work half way.
In a weeks time, four teenage children passed away who accidentally fell in water storage tanks, as on Dec 21/2021, two children have died after falling into a water-filled pit in Chakdar Mohalla Gagal in Lolab.
The two children were identified as Mustafa Ahmad Bhadana and Sumaiya Akhter who fell into a deep pit stored with water, dug by a local contractor.
The minor duo were evacuated and rushed to Sub-district Hospital Kupwara where both of them were, however declared as brought dead on arrival.
