Maharajas were people friendly rulers
12/26/2021 11:15:11 PM

Former J&K Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad recently stated that the rule of Maharajas was better than the present J&K regime. Many people in the newly carved out Union Territory do second Azad. Even the local BJP leaders on many occasions have echoed the similar views.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into Union Territories—Jammu region has been at the receiving end. The bureaucrats have turned monarchs. The decisions that have been taken by them have hit a common man in Jammu hard. The scrapping of Darbar Move practice, giving mining contracts to outsiders and allotting land for setting up industries to big industrialists have led to local people in Jammu getting disempowered. Most of the decisions taken during the past two years have been unilateral as people of Jammu have not been taken on board before taking any decision. They have been just informed about the moves of the government.
The Delimitation Commission has almost finalized its report and the voices to have a popular government at place are becoming shriller. Bureaucrats remaining inaccessible and not meeting the people have annoyed the people as they have no one whom they can approach with their grievances and problems. Whenever people approach the local BJP leaders and the former MLAs to get any of their grievances redressed they express their helplessness as they are also not being heard.
Maharajas, who ruled J&K till 1947 protected the rights of J&K people and always worked on keeping Jammu and Kashmir regions together. The laws enacted by them were people friendly and their grievance redressal system was better than the system of the present rulers.
The last two years have proven beyond doubt that Maharajas were people friendly and took the decisions that helped a common man. The present regime needs to take a cue from how Maharajas ruled Jammu and Kashmir. People are paying heavily for the experiments being conducted by the present set of rulers. They should stop experimenting and reach out to people. They are unaware about the ground situation. If they continue to ignore the people it could prove disastrous for the local BJP leaders as everyone knows that the Centre is ruling J&K and BJP is in power.
