As Jammu awaits artificial lake for a decade, Dal, Nigeen get Rs 260 Cr more
2/5/2022 11:52:00 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 5: Even as the construction of artificial lake in Jammu City continues to miss deadlines for around a decade, the government looks “more concerned” about the Dal and Nigeen lakes in Srinagar which have been granted special funds in the recent Union Budget.
While the Union Territory of J&K has been granted Rs 35,581.44 crore as a part of the central government’s assistance, grants and loans for the financial year of 2022-23, which is Rs 877 crore more than the amount granted last year, Rs 273 crore has been allotted for rehabilitation of people living within the Dal Lake and Nagin Lake areas.
This whopping amount is in addition to crores already spend on these waterbodies.
But while Dal and Nigeen lakes continue to be on the “priority,” the artificial lake in Jammu remains a distant dream despite missing several deadlines.
In October 2021, the Jammu and Kashmir administration approved the revised project for the construction of balance works of Tawi barrage, popularly called Artificial Lake, at an estimated cost of ₹73.34 crore.
The proposed gated barrage on Tawi is one of the three subprojects of the prestigious artificial lake project that which was conceptualised to give a boost to regional tourism in Jammu by creating recreational activities like boating and water sports, besides enhancing the overall aesthetic look of the city.
The project was originally sanctioned in the financial year 2010-11 at a cost of ₹70.00 crore by dovetailing funds from various sources.
However, the project was stalled on account of contractor’s inactivity for seven years leading to cancellation of awarded tender and related cost escalation.
A whopping ₹60 crore of tax payers’ money has been spent so far in the past 12 odd years since it was conceived in 2009.
On May 31 2021, J&K administration headed by LG Manoj Sinha had again set a timeline for the completion of the protracted project.
