PMAY moving at tardy pace
2/20/2022 11:08:17 PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship housing scheme, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY), Gramin, for the rural poor moving at a snail’s pace in Jammu and Kashmir has dismayed the Union Rural Development Ministry.
Till date the J&K Government has been able to construct just 37% houses till date against the set target of 201633 houses.
The PMAY was launched by the Centre across the country with an aim to provide houses to the people living under Below Poverty Line. The scheme has helped many poor people in the country to build small dwellings and it has been implemented on a fast track basis in most of the states and union territories.
People are asking why the implementation of this scheme has been so tardy in J&K, despite the Central Government funding it liberally. There have been complaints about the benefits of the PMAY scheme not reaching the deserving and the officials resorting to pick and choose methods.
Panchayat representatives too have expressed displeasure over them not being included in the process of finalizing the list of PMAY beneficiaries. After J&K’s transition into a Union Territory people were hoping that things will improve and the deserving will be given the priority. But it appears that the development is confined to papers only and people continue to suffer.
The officials remaining inaccessible have made the situation worse as they have been left with no one to approach.
The Union Rural Development Ministry has pulled up the J&K Government for the slow pace of the housing scheme and has recommended for an intense follow-up required by JK administration to complete the target.
The officials who are leaving no stone unturned to claim that J&K is witnessing massive development need to be asked why the implementation of such an important housing scheme has been slow. And why people are complaining about the benefits not reaching the deserving.
The ones who are claiming that all is well and are creating an impression no injustice is being done with anyone and a common man is the priority need to explain what they have done for the common man.
The results of all the good work need to be visible. Claims and counter claims won’t help. There needs to be something on the ground.
