2 militants, civilian killed in south Kashmir | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 25: Two militants and a civilian were killed during an operation in Kashmir officials said on Friday. They said an anti militancy operation was launched at Amshipora area of south Kashmir's Shopian district by joint teams of security forces during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday following an input about the presence of militants in the area. Police said a cluster of houses were taken under cordon and civilians were evacuated to safety. "Thereafter, house to house searches were started in the wee hours to locate the hiding militants. During the search, militants came out and resorted to indiscriminate firing. In the firing by the militants one civilian Shakeel Ahmed Khan of Amshipora was seriously wounded. The injured civilian while being evacuated for medical help succumbed to the injuries," a police statement said . "Terrorist's fire was retaliated upon effectively in which both militants were neutralized," it added. The two slain militants were identified by the police as Muzamil Ahmad Mir and Shariq Ayoob - both residents of Shopian and were affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Toiba. "Terrorist Muzamil was involved in several terror related crimes. Both the neutralised militants belonged to proscribed terror outfit LeT. Incriminating materials including Arms ( one AK 56 rifle and one pistol) and ammunition were also recovered," Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said. This is the second gunfight in Shopian district in the last six days. On February 19, two soldiers and a local Lashkar-e-Toiba militant were killed in a gun battle at Chermarg Zainapora. |
